Using Perfume to Make a Fashion Statement

When Chanel launched their iconic perfume No. 5 in the 1920s the stage was set for the world of fashion to meet the world of fragrance. Since Chanel, fashion houses have been known for their fragrances as much as for their designs.

Chanel, Versace and Gucci are only a few examples of top designers who release perfumes almost as frequently as new collections. The fashion/ perfume connection is not restricted to top designer houses. Many high-street clothing stores also release perfume ranges, for example, French Connection. Even top fashion models such as Kate Moss have their own signature perfume.

The fact is perfume is an integral part of fashion. It is not just what clothes you wear but also what fragrance you wear that denotes your style. Perfume is every bit as much of a fashion statement as wearing a hat or a style of jacket. After Kate Middleton married Prince William, not only did fashion critics analyse the dress they also spoke about the fragrance she selected to wear on the day.

Perfume, like fashion, also reflects the seasons. It can be floral and light in spring time or dark and musky in winter. Perfume is an integral part of fashion in every season.

Perfume is an important part of any wardrobe and should represent the overall mood of an outfit. Having a collection of different scents is much like having a collection of handbags.
